How cool is that | June 2018

We bring you each month our coolest places to go, food we love and experiences we enjoy. We will also share with you news about inspiring artists, designers & entrepreneurs. Here the list of our 5 June favorites:

Viktor & Rolf | Kunsthal Rotterdam
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Dutch luxury fashion house Viktor&Rolf, the Kunsthal organizes a large exhibition in collaboration with the Dutch designers and Canadian curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot. Around 60 works from Viktor&Rolf’s haute couture collections give an insight into their unconventional and conceptual approach, also showing that they have never shied away from criticizing the fashion industry (of which they are a part themselves). With regard to form and materials – the interplay of lines, volumes, bows, collars, ruffles etc. – their creations are stunningly beautiful and technically perfect.

Viktor&Rolf have carved a contradictory identity that pushes the boundaries between art and fashion, often contrasting romance and rebellion, exuberance and control, classicism and conceptualism. The 1999 Russian Doll show, for which Viktor&Rolf draped nine layers of clothing around a single woman, meant their international breakthrough and is – for me – absolutely the highlight of the exhibition.

Upgrade your visit to the exhibition to a fabulous experience by booking the V&R-hotel package including an overnight stay with surprising extra’s in the 5 star Design hotel Mainport like wellness, a champagne breakfast buffet, a poster and signed catalogue by Viktor&Rolf. This luxury design hotel is located on 5 minutes walking distance from the Kunsthal, at the Maas in the city centre of Rotterdam.

Open from 27 May, 2018 – 30 September, 2018.

RAIBU | Amsterdam
In Japanese RAIBU means ’in the moment’ and in this moment women across the world are feeling their power, embracing their creativity and expressing their uniqueness like never before. The RAIBU label collection is a reflection of this exciting time as it features original and distinctive pieces that escape the boundaries of the mainstream brands.

Founder and creative director, Sau-Han Wong travels through Europe and Asia taking inspiration from Scandinavian, Japanese and especially South Korean design styles, to create an unique fashion label. The result is a minimalistic and serene look with a surprising twist. ‘I was born with a strong sense of wanderlust and RAIBU is greatly influenced by the creativity and culture I experience when I travel. No matter where I visit I’m always impressed by the different ways womanhood is expressed and that is exactly the essence of RAIBU the fashion label’. The items are produced on a small scale in both South Korea and in her Amsterdam based studio.

Sale at the souterrain | Rotterdam
This inimini concept pop-up store is hidden in the souterrain of  INCONCEPT, in the vibrant heart of the city and has a focus on vintage, pre-loved fashion, natural cosmetics and contemporary art. You will find darling deals of one-of-a-kind items with an unique story, from handmade to design, from vintage to avant-garde. From that one and only flower-power dress to the freshest biological bath-soap  Almost all of the products are handmade, vintage or restyled. No chemicals, but always 100% organic.

The collection is based on the philosophy to be well aware of our environment and to strive to zero waste and self-sufficiency.

Recycling fashion items from the previous millennium is of course a lot of fun – all the trends that have passed over the decades, some more interesting than others – and mixing them together gives even a deeper layer and new meaning of fashion communication – but is is also sustainable, making ’vintage’ no longer a trend but a necessity.

Cityprints | Rotterdam
Rotterdam, Europe’s coolest city? The Netherland’s second largest city is experiencing a facelift with striking architecture. The founders of Cityprints, all graduated from the Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam, honor these Rotterdam icons with cool and contemporary line drawings.

The concept arose from the street, in the tram to be precise, talking about the many beautiful buildings in the city. Looking for prints of Rotterdam buildings for home, they discovered there were not any cool ones. That is how their new company started. The prints are designed and printed by themselves. On luxurious Tinteretto paper, making the art print a stylish addition to any interior. The collection Rotterdam – available at the Inconceptstore, Coolsingel 83 Rotterdam – consists of the Cruise Terminal, Erasmus Bridge, De Hef, Euromast, Hofbogen, Cube Houses, Markthal, De Rotterdam, Witte Huis, Hotel New York, Central Station, and not to mention Stadium Feijenoord! What is your favorite drawing and which one you miss right now?

Festival in a bottle | Rotterdam
It’s hot out, meaning time to mix yourself up a refreshing, cool cocktail. Here is our favorite recipe! All you need is a Wine Festival and a bottle of a – slightly sweet – white wine (0.7L). Add the white wine to the carafe with fruits and spices and place it in the fridge for about 60 minutes, stir each 20 minutes and it’s done. Serve the sangria in chilled, ice-filled wineglasses. Cheers!

Festival in a Bottle is a young company (2015) based in Rotterdam, producing DIY bottles filled with different combinations of the finest dried fruits and spices without additives They are inspired by the traditional 18th century recipes for making liqueurs and turned that into a modern concept. It invites you to create your own variation, simple by adding your favorite rum, vodka, gin or wine. The result is a pretty cool Sangria or Liqueur with a beautiful color and a tempting scent. Perfect for degustation, shots or as a base for great cocktails. FYI: all necessary information about the products are in the instruction booklet attached to the bottle and btw, they make perfect holiday, housewarming or hostess gift, too. Available at INCONCEPT or online.

How cool is that | May 2018

We bring you each month our coolest places to go, food we love and experiences we enjoy. We will also share with you news about inspiring artists, designers and entrepreneurs. Our 5 May favorites are exclusively from our travel through the magical island of Bali:

Bisma Eight Boutique hotel | Ubud, Bali

We love Ubud, an amazing little town in the highlands of Bali, filled with traditional art and craft. If you are traveling to Bali, there is no way around visiting Ubud.

And even though it has become quite touristy over the years, not only because of Elizabeth Gilbert’s infamous book ’Eat, Pray, Love’, there is still some pretty cool hotspots. We definitely recommend Ubud’s Bisma Eight, surrounded by nature, just a little away from the main strip and the tourist hustle bustle of the center. This gorgeous industrial-chic boutiquey hotel with only 38 spacious suites divided into 3 categories, is an absolutely luxurious treat. We had the pleasure of staying in one of the Forest Suites on the upper floor. A huge 50 square meter suite with a separate living area and a private jungle-view balcony for a magnificent view over the rainforest trees.

The interior is a perfect match of Japanese minimalism, Scandinavian-style furniture and accessories that reflect tradition Balinese craftsmanship. The highlight of the suite is the huge Japanese onsen-style tub in the bathroom, made from Canadian cedar wood. This tub is a statement of pure indulgence. From lazy days in the sun, with your eyes on the green tropical backdrop, the subtle noise of the jungle in your ears, to the hotels own (heated outdoor) infinitely pool, which will blow you away! Think killer cocktails by your side to romantic sunsets and candlelight dinners in the evening.

Workshops and classes

If you like to stay active on holidays, Bisma Eight is your soulmate ever. Depending on the day of your stay, there are Hatha yoga sessions on the rooftop from 8 – 9 am (daily), Balinese traditional dance workshops from 4 – 5pm (Monday), Canang Sari (Balinese offerings) from 4 -5pm (Tuesday), Balinese traditional cooking classes from 10:30 – 11:30am (Thursday), a Crafty Mocktail Masterclass from 3 – 4pm (Saturday) and an Ubud town leisure cycling, held from 4 -5pm every Saturday & Sunday.

Food and drinks

From the lobby, a staircase leads up to heavenly Copper Kitchen & Bar. The menu is full of traditional and international dishes made from locally-sourced ingredients, including the hotel’s organic garden. For a gentle breeze and a view at dinner, go for a table on the trellised rooftop. You can take your breakfast anywhere you’d like; from waffles with yuzu parfait, ricotta dumplings, poached eggs, fresh pastries and more, with freshly squeezed juices, herbal teas and delicious coffee. For serious cocktails head to the hotelbar. You can also order ice-cold drinks and after-swim cocktails and nibbles throughout the day at the Pool Pavilion, and the Library Cafe, where you can enjoy a really good cup of coffee with a book from the hotel’s collection. The cafe brews Kintamani-grown Arabica coffee from local Tetap Happy Coffee Roasters.

For more Ubud adventures
The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, an important spiritual, economic, educational and conservation center for the village of Padantegal, is just one kilometer away as is also Folk Pool & Gardens, just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. For brunch, order eggs many ways, freshly-baked breads, fruit-filled smoothies and lychee iced tea. Following the ’clash of cultures’-theme of the cafe, the 25 meters long outdoors swimming pool is an inclusive leisure spot, where you can indeed ’clash and splash’. On weekly basis Folk provides great themed events and Sundays a selected DJ will make the poolwater vibrate. Check out their program:

Ubud (medicine in Sanskrit) was once a center for medicating the body & soul. Nowadays it is full of (healthy) boutiques; check out the many Bali shops with the best organic, natural and eco-friendly items. Kou Bali, for organic & natural handmade soap, Kou Cuisine for natural and delicious handmade jams. Try our favorite: milk caramel. Venture further afield to the mesmerizing Tegalalang Ceking Rice Terraces in Jalan Raya Tegalalang. Btw, avoid going at midday; get tracking early morning or late afternoon. Enjoy the cool mountain breezes and on the way, the longest row of art shops from generations of woodcarvers and craftsmen.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu | Uluwatu, Bali

Bali, aka the ’Island of the Gods’, is home to more than thousand temples. We love to feature one amazing temple, the Pura Luhur Uluwatu or popularly known as the Uluwatu temple, spectacular located on a cliff’s edge approx. 70 metres above sea level.

This temple is celebrated for its regilious importance and the stunning naturel surrounding. Thus making it one of the prominent sites in Bali, frequented by the Balinese Hindu pilgrims and visitors to the island alike. It is one of the six key temples believed to be Bali’s spiritual pillars. Just like anything else important and historical, the history of Uluwatu temple is documented on ancient lontar, palm leaf scrolls inscribed with ancient Balinese or Javanese letters.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is also one of the top places on the island to go for a really stunning sunset, overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean and daily Kecak dances performances.

Opening hours: 09:00 – 18:00. As a place of worship however, it is open 24 hours daily. Location: Pura Luhur Uluwatu is located in Pecuta Village, Kuta sub-district, Badung regency.

Meet some great cutting edge hotels along the southern coastline of Bali on the Bukit Peninsula. Enjoy!

Seasalt Restaurant| Seminyak, Bali

One of the little things we certainly take home are the salted watermelon amuse bouches. They are so deliciously addictive!

The juicy, crisp flavor of the watermelon helps soothe the kick of the salt. If you’re planning a special dinner and looking for a seafood restaurant with a view, drop by at Seasalt Seminyak. It has a calm atmosphere, a minimalistic but chic bar. We choose the deck over the indoor area. Simply because of the incredible ocean view and the company of live acoustic performance. The dining concept of Seasalt is amazing, bringing guests a taste directly from the sea. It is not only about fish, prawns, crabs and shellfishes but also seaweeds and the sea salt itself. For us, it was a memorable experience, the fresh unique food, the undisturbed ocean view, the smell of seawater, the waves sound and the cosy set-up of the restaurant. Thank you, Seasalt for the lovely and delicious B-day cake. Everything was perfect!

Ichibuns restaurant | Londen

Looking for the best authentic East Asian traditions with modern dining experiences in Soho, Chinatown London? Go to Ichibuns – a pun on the Japanese term for ‘number one’! Entering is a little like stumbling into a hallucinogenic Japanese version of Alice in Wonderland. This brand new Japanese-inspired dining concept is born by the founders of Nobu and Ping Pong. Located at 22 Wardour Street, Chinatown London, Ichibuns speciality is Asian-style burgers. Pretty incredible, but enjoy the best luxury fast food at affordable prices in a modern Japanese environment!

Designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu of Tokyo’s Studio Glitt, Ichibuns confounds on several fronts. The 3,900 sq ft, 130 cover restaurant spread across three floors. Diners will be immersed in an eclectic Tokyo rock-and-roll interior inspired by 50s and 60s Japanese subcultures and the quintessential American diner. Practically every surface, including the ceilings, is festooned with an energetic magpie collection of memorabilia, manga comics, cushion covers made of kimonos, period film posters, old coal stoves repurposed as washroom sinks, and a montage of origami paper magnified as wall panels.

As it turns out, the theatricality is almost a diversion, because in the kitchen, executive chef Brendan Fong executes an equally eclectic spread that takes in burgers of Australian wagyu and British grass-fed beef – paired with sautéed shitake mushrooms, white truffle oil and blue cheese fondue, or encrusted with panko flakes – alongside steaming bowls of ramen with king crab, snow crab maki, and milkshakes spiked with sesame ice-cream, maple syrup and peanut butter. In addition to table service throughout the restaurant, guests can order from a concrete takeaway counter which has been moulded to represent Japanese granite, and on the plant-filled first floor, enjoy views overlooking bustling Chinatown London, one of the West End’s most iconic destinations.

Pablo & Valentina | Lille

This newly opened salon de the is one of the favorite to-go places now at Vieux-Lille, the old city of Lille. The interior is colorful and bright with Scandinavian and Italian elements and brings a very elegant, chic and trendy note.

Perfect for lunch, aperitif or tea break. Named after their grandchildren, Pablo and Valentina, this tearoom is first and foremost a family story. Located in the old APC shop at rue Masurel in Lille, Francis Cordelette, now retired, wants to create a place that offers a moment of happiness to those who go there. With his daughter Christine, a designer at Piks Design, his son Vincent photographer, whose fashion shots can be admired here and his wife Aline, they serve pretty good and daily freshly baked homemade pastries, a selection of products (jams, honey, tea, wines) sorted in a hyper selective and qualitative way. Here you can taste fruit or caramel chocolate pies, orange gingerbread, cabbages, cookies and drink seasonal fruit juices with fresh smoothies. At lunchtime, you can enjoy homemade soup and taste the boards of cold cuts, cheese or salmon.

Apart from the good food, Pablo & Valentina is beautifully located in a crossing place with a great view of the church of La Treille with a private garden at the back.

Take a look at your next visit. You love it. 17, rue Masurel – Lille. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 12H to 20H.

How cool is that | December 2017

We bring you each month our coolest places to go, food we love and experiences we enjoy. We will also share with you news about inspiring artists, designers and entrepreneurs. Here the list of our 5 December favorites:

Stedelijk Museum | Amsterdam

As from October last, Keith Haring’s, ’Velum’ will be on display again at the Stedelijk Museum. Ring a bell? The ’Velum’ was made as an addition to his solo exhibition in 1986. For this show, Haring didn’t simply want to present artwork he’d already made – he insisted on making new work. He created this amazing, incredible piece of art of 12 x 20 meters in just one day, using spray paint. Making it his biggest piece in Europe, he turned the event into an energy-fueled performance. While photographers and journalists looked on, he painted rapidly and rhythmically, moving over the canopy, hip-hop playing in the background. Now 30 years later and restored, the enormous piece of art was placed in its original location above the stairs, it is back for everyone to enjoy. I really cannot wait to go see it. What about you? Open from 11 October 2017 to 2 June 2018.

June 2016, Evaa was selected to be the Dutch nominee for the International Woolmark Prize 2016/2017.
